NEWS February 2022
I decided to retire from my consultancy after 20 years which have provided an interesting variety of challenges. Thanks to all those who employed my services and to friends and colleagues with whom I worked from time to time or who provided support.
August 2020I have posted a video version of my 2019 talks about Pontefract Hermitage on YouTube. It is in 2 10-minute parts and can be found via these links: Saving Pontefract Hermitage Part 1 and Saving Pontefract Hermitage Part 2
November 2019
Since retiring from the chairmanship and committee of the IChemE Water Special Interest Group I have been enjoying my new free time but have devoted some of it to my long-standing involvement with the problem of water level in the Pontefract Hermitage well. This is part of a Grade 1-listed medieval monument. The public have not been permitted access since 2009 when the water level rose following construction of a new hospital nearby. In the intervening 10 years various reports have confirmed that the hospital has interfered with groundwater flow but a sustainable solution remains to be implemented. We are now using publicity in an attempt to provoke progress. In January 2019 I gave a talk to the Tyne and Humber Branch of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management in Sheffield, relayed live to venues in Leeds and Newcastle. In May, I addressed the Yorkshire Branch of The Geological Society in Leeds; and in June I gave a presentation at a public meeting in Pontefract organised by the Pontefract Heritage Partnership. The Environment magazine November 2019 published an article based on these talks.
I advised regarding the treatment plant and compliance with the licence conditions of a private water supply.
On behalf of IChemE Water SIG I attended an assembly at Oxspring primary school near Barnsley to present them with a Water Box, comprising apparatus for experiments relating to water.
For our long commitment to and achievements on behalf of the Water SIG, consultant Richard Hill and I were jointly awared the 2019 Greene Medal of the IChemE. We received our medals and gave a talk on chemical engineering in water, at a meeting of the IChemE Thames Valley group in November. The Water SIG committee also presented us with an award - see the report in The Chemical Engineer.
